Job Description General Purpose: Obtains radiographs in accordance with physician---s orders and the policies and procedures of the contracting employer. Maintains equipment and appropriately uses supplies. Essential Functions: Implements physician orders and reports any adverse patient reaction. Prepares patients for the ordered procedure by explaining the procedure and removing articles through which x-rays cannot pass. Recognizes changing patient conditions or emergency patient situations, and summons appropriate assistance. Appropriately positions patients for a wide variety of common as well as specialized radiographic studies as assigned. Shields and protects patients, self and others from unnecessary radiation exposure. Ensures that any required consent forms are signed and dated according to the contracting employer---s policy prior to performing the radiological procedure. Positions radiographic equipment at the correct angle and height for the ordered study. Sets controls on the equipment to produce radiographs of the appropriate density, detail, and contrast. Provides preventive maintenance to equipment according to the contracting employer---s policies and procedures. May assist the Radiologist with more complex and invasive radiological procedures as assigned. Administers approved contrast medium according to physician---s orders and the contracting employer---s policies and procedures. Wears a badge to monitor radiation exposure according to facility policy and procedure and maintains a record of cumulative lifetime doses. Performs procedures on patients with a wide variety of diagnoses, conditions, and diseases. Reads and understands policy and procedure manuals, written physician---s orders, equipment operating instructions and safety manuals. Reviews a variety of technical data (e.g. lab and diagnostic test results), as well as a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Applies basic math to job situations (e.g. drug calculations, machine settings). Establishes effective relationships with patients, physicians, families/visitors, coworkers and superiors. Maintains a safe work environment. Responds to emergency/disaster situations according to the policies and procedures of the contracting employer. Operates equipment and devices according to manufacturer---s operating instructions and the contracting employer---s policies and procedures. Provides legible, clear written or electronic documentation of all procedures provided, solutions administered, and the patient---s response to each procedure. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with contracting employer---s policies and procedures. May provide limited supervision to other radiology personnel as qualified and assigned through task assignments, direction and evaluation of work completed. Works under the direct supervision of the contracting employer who is also responsible for monitoring work in progress and reevaluating the status of the assigned work at the end of the shift/assignment. Completes training for new assignments/tasks and any subsequent competency validation per the direction and procedures of the contracting employer. Completes other assignments as requested and assigned. May have access to personal health information (---PHI---) necessary to fulfill the above duties and responsibilities. Access to use and ability to disclose PHI is further defined by each organization/department. Minimum Education & Experience Requirements: Graduate from an accredited program/school of radiology technology. Current certification as a Radiology Technologist from the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT). Licensure as required by law or regulation. Additional certifications or specialized skills and experience (e.g. sonography, CT scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiation therapy, and invasive radiological procedures) as required by the contracting employer. One (1) year experience as a radiology technician within the last five (5) years and experience as defined by the contracting employer. Evidence of current Basic Life Support (BLS) training for infants, children and adults. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: Effectively reads and communicates in the English language. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work as a member of a team, including but not limited to the ability to manage stress appropriately, to make decisions under pressure, and to handle multiple priorities. Ability to maintain and demonstrate professional behavior at all times. Applicable federal and state health requirements to provide client services as appropriate. Working Conditions & Physical Effort: Work is performed in clinics, schools, hospitals, nursing homes or other occupational settings. Work environment involves frequent exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens and/or potentially infectious or hazardous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment (e.g. face masks, goggles, latex and or non-latex gloves). Work environment involves frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals/detergents/gases (e.g. film developer), potential electrical shock and to x- ray/electromagnetic energy. Ability to spend varying amounts of time sitting, standing and walking. Sufficient endurance to perform the required physical and mental tasks over long periods of time. Manual dexterity (eye-hand coordination) and fine motor function necessary to operate equipment. Ability to work in areas that are confined and/or crowded. Ability to physically stretch and reach, bend, twist, kneel, squat, stand, sit, walk and climb stairs. Requires normal or correctible vision and the ability to discern color, as necessary to perform job functions. Physical activity is medium and may require frequent lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs.
