Job DescriptionGeneral Purpose:The Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT) is trained to provide emergency/ life support care at the
scene of an accident or medical emergency. Under state law/practice
guidelines, the EMT administers urgent/emergency medical attention
to individuals of all ages, and when necessary, provides
transportation to a hospital for comprehensive medical care under
medical direction. EMTs may also function as care providers in
industrial health clinic settings and health care facilities under
the direction of the licensed nurse/physician. Essential
Functions:
- Works within the guidelines of the contracting facility and
under the direction of a licensed nurse or physician.
- All EMTs, according to level of training may open airways to
restore breathing, institute methods to control bleeding,
administer oxygen, immobilize fractures, bandage wounds, assist in
childbirth, manage emotionally disturbed patients, provide
emergency care to heart attack victims, give initial care to
poison, burn and drown victims, and use automated external
defibrillators in the resuscitation of cardiac arrest victims.
- Intermediate Level Trained EMTs may administer intravenous
fluids, use manual defibrillators in cardiac resuscitation, use
advanced airway techniques and equipment (i.e., oral airway), and
other intensive care procedures.
- EMT-Paramedics may do all the above procedures and administer
drugs orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms,
perform endotracheal intubations, and use monitors and other
complex equipment.
- Records all pertinent patient data including care
rendered.
- Completes other assignments as requested and assigned.
- May have access to personal health information ("PHI")
necessary to fulfill the above duties and responsibilities. Access
to use and ability to disclose PHI is further defined by each
organization/department.Minimum Education & Experience
Requirements:
- Graduate of an approved EMT training program and successful
completion of the written and practical examination administered by
the State certifying agency or the National Registry of Emergency
Medical Technicians.
- Current registration with the state certifying agency and/or
the NREMT.
- Able to provide proof of current CPR/BLS training including
adults, children and infants.
- Able to provide proof of ACLS and/or PALS training.
- One (1) year experience as an EMT within the past five (5)
years or as required by the contracting facility.Knowledge, Skills
& Abilities Required:
- Responsible for performing tasks within the scope of his/her
educational preparation and knowledge, as permitted under local,
state and federal guidelines.
- Able to effectively communicate with clinical and non-clinical
individuals.
- Able to read and interpret technical instructions, visually and
auditorially assess the patient.
- Able to provide proof of valid driver's license, if
applicable.
- Able to provide proof of valid auto liability insurance if
assignment(s) include driving own vehicle.
- Meets applicable health requirements to provide patient
care.Working Conditions & Physical Effort:
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, in all types of
weather under stressful conditions/situations for extended periods
of time, with irregular working hours.
- Requires excellent hand-eye coordination, fine motor function
necessary to operate equipment and prepare/calibrate medications
and solutions.
- Requires normal, correctable vision and hearing, and the
ability to accurately discern colors related to job functions.
- Work environment involves frequent exposure to communicable
diseases, blood borne pathogens and/or potentially infectious or
hazardous materials and situations that require following extensive
safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment
(e.g. face masks, goggles, latex and or non-latex gloves).

- Able to read and interpret technical instructions; requires

necessary to operate equipment and prepare/calibrate medications
and solutions.
- Heavy physical activity that requires frequent to constant
lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling over 50 lbs., and to
physically stretch, bend, stoop, twist, stand, sit, walk, reach and
climb stairs.
